The Department of Health rules are administered under Title 246 of the Washington Administrative Code (WAC).  Statutory authority is given to the Department by the Washington State Legislature through the Revised Code of Washington (RCW).

Local health jurisdictions often implement or enforce regulations that are developed by the department, the state board of health, or other state agencies. In addition, local health jurisdictions may set additional public health standards specific to the communities they serve.
